Waste and emissions

A report by the Environmental and Food Agency of Iceland, published in April 1999, reveals that the concentration of pollutants, such as heavy metals, radionuclides and persistent organic pollutants in Icelandic waters and seafood, is extremely low - and far below the international standards set for consumption.

The overall environment is relatively free from pollutants of any kind. Concentration levels of contaminants in humans are on the level with the lowest reported. In agricultural products, the levels of observed contaminants are low or hardly detectable. Authorities expect industry to maintain the environmental purity of its operational surroundings.
