Shipping companies

The country offers frequent and efficient sea links to both sides of the Atlantic, combined with a powerful domestic transport infrastructure. Three Icelandic companies – Eimskip, Samskip and Atlantsskip – are the principal container shipping lines. They operate regular cargo schedules serving ports in North America, Scandinavia, the UK, continental Europe and the Baltics, and have highly developed international freight forwarding systems. Furthermore, these lines operate bulk charter transportation for specific imports and exports, for example industrial raw materials and finished products. Iceland's harbors are ice-free all year.

At Sauðárkrókur is import/export harbor, capable of docking ships up to 160 m in length. Major improvements on the harbor are in process, making the harbor better and safer than ever. No scheduled sailing routes are through the harbor of Sauðárkrókur. Many chartered vessels do dock at the harbor each year and the harbor is equipped to load and unload all common types of freight. Regular import and export from Skagafjörður is mostly trucked to and from nearby import/export harbor.

Fees for transport to and from a harbor are negotiable and for large customers they are usually on a pair with industrial locations closer to the harbors.
