Skagafjörður is one of the most important food production region in Iceland, processing and producing food and feed in many sectors. The agricultural heritage as well as good and stable seafood industry in Skagafjörður has been the mainstays of the food and beverage cluster in the region, with many strong and specialized supportive businesses located in Sauðárkrókur. About 20% of the workforce is employed directly within the food and beverage industry and additionally about 5% in supporting businesses as food and feed transport, research and control agencies, retail, marketing, waste treatment and other.
Innovation and technology have been the guiding light in the food and beverage cluster in Skagafjörður. This is realized equally in farming, where robots have taken over in most of the dairy farms and in the food processing plants where automation has relived humans from many slots at the production lines.
